How long can we continue to ignore the Great Housing Disaster? Pathetic low builds where we need huge output and lots more rented housing. Rising homelessness and waiting lists. Half the population unable to raise the deposit to get on the ladder. Far more overcrowding. All ignored by a Government intent on carrying on its war against councils to force them to give away their housing stock.

Around 1400 people yesterday attended a mass lobby of Parliament calling for direct investment in council housing. Austin chaired the main platform in Central Hall Westminster, which featured speeches from councillors, tenants, union leaders and MPs. The speeches were opened with a surprise appearance from former MP and supporter of council housing Tony Benn.

The House of Commons Council Housing Group of MPs is holding its third evidence taking session next Tuesday (8 March) as part of its inquiry to demonstrate support for the ‘fourth option’ for council housing. MPs will be hearing evidence from tenants, councillors, council officers and trade unions.

When Camden tenants voted overwhelmingly against setting up an Arms length Management Organisation to run council housing they didn`t just follow a series of other ballots from Birmingham to Stockport, rejecting privatisation of council housing. They also threw government housing policy into crisis. John Prescott’s policy of bullying tenants into choosing between alternatives they don’t want is running into a brick wall. What they want is a real choice which includes staying with the council. That`s what they really want to do and it`s a betrayal that our Labour Government is blackmailing them into voting for privatisation by starving councils of money and letting council estates fester.

The two reports “A Choice for NEL” (TP21) and “Housing Options Appraisal” (by Beha Williams Norman) both point to the benefits of postponing a decision on privatisation of NEL`s council housing stock.
Both agree that the situation is manageable in the immediate future. BWN indicates that the council will be able to bring its stock up to Decent Housing Standards by 2010, though improvement beyond this and such desirable benefits as double glazing, new kitchens and bathrooms, etc., are considered attainable only through LSVT.

Thank you for sending to me a copy of Austin Mitchell’s statement to the N E Lincs Labour Group. What he has to say is very much in line with our own thoughts and desires. Unfortunately however, in the light of the Consultants report to what was then a Labour Council the Tenants Assembly was co-erced into agreeing to support the Councils application for inclusion on this years transfer list.
