From Mess to Success

I agonised over how I was going to vote on Same Sex Marriage (which lead a lot of people to wrongly assume I was voting against) but that process, which has been going on for some weeks and was particularly intense on Tuesday, ended with a decision to vote for the bill.

Same Sex Mess

I’m in an agony of indecision over same sex marriage. On the one hand I’m not illiberal or homophobic. On the other I am not particularly bothered about this, think civil partnership is enough, and have concerns about the legal repercussions.

Blog from the Dead

Cameron’s revival of the Conservative’s poll ratings through his EU con has encouraged me to revive my blog. Firstly let me apologise for neglecting it so much. The truth is it had become too easy to criticise the shambolic Government and was becoming repetitive.

PRESS RELEASE - Grimsby Institute

PRESS RELEASE

AUSTIN MITCHELL MP
(GRIMSBY 342145)

KEEP A LEVEL COURSES AT THE INSTITUTE

Grimsby Institute is wrong to stop teaching A Level courses from September. These courses offer variety in the Institute, opportunity to students who want to go into Higher Education and benefits to late comers.

It`s wrong to close down this path to Higher Education just as the College moves into its magnificent University Centre. Most of the students will be able to go on with A Level courses at Franklin, our excellent Sixth Form College. But not all and I`ve already heard from some students who will be forced to go to Hull or Lincoln. Franklin is a different examination board and doesn`t offer some of the courses the Institute runs so progress into universities will be slowed down.

I feel this particularly strongly because taking her A Levels at the Institute enthused my daughter, Hannah, to go to university and helped her to get there which Hereford, where she took GCSEs, didn`t. Everyone should have the same opportunity.

I realise that the College wants to concentrate on vocational paths and they should. But no need to close down academic paths to do that. I also know they`re unhappy with the quality of some of the courses because teachers aren`t as well paid as in schools and sixth form colleges but, again, closing them precludes improvement. We should encourage both and offer students as many opportunities as possible. The more opportunities we can offer to our young people in Grimsby the better. They deserve the best and closure is no way of getting it.
