Clever Clegg the clog dancer has announced his great idea. Deny people the referendum the Libs promised: a referendum on the EU constitution. Give them a referendum they don’t want on in our out.
Genius. Saves the government. Avoids the Liberals being humiliated by defeat. And lets the Libs stand on both sides of the argument: their preferred position.
On this basis the Libs wouldn’t have had a referendum on Devolution nut one on the Act of the Union 1707 while Labour should never have had its 1975 referendum but one on whether there should have been a referendum before entry.
The lad is a prime contender for the DeLors Medal for services to the EU though Europe’s McShane is the frontrunner. The lad should go far. Preferably soon. |
