The sun beats down outside. The waves break zooming the surfers in and huge flocks of birds dive bomb the poor pilchards.
I sit glued to the Democratic convention in Denver. Better than being there and marvellous to watch.
It's a coronation and the media haven't been able to raise any splits like with the Clinton's sulk (answer: no, she was brillaint) the real excitement is the great splurge of emotion about America, about the party, about the people.
How marvellous it would be to have a similar outpouring in the UK. But I doubt if we could make it. Our poltiticians nit pick. We don't have a great British dream (unless it's emigrate) and out leaders don't like the party - think Tony Blair sobbing out his love of the Labour Party. And we can't proclaim our policies because we always have to triangulate them. Sob sob sob.

Linda's not only getting more emails from Barack but now form his wife and Joe Biden as well. What's more, they're all sending videos of their speeches. Perhaps I'd better reconsider the idea of using this technique in Grimsby. Linda might shout at them and denounce me into the bargain.

Michell Obama did a great job for Barack. Like Blair, he's an able young meritocrat on the make. Like Cherie she came from a humble background on the south side of Chicago.
But unlike Cherie she rooted her husband in it and gave him credibility in a party of the people. Cherie could and should have done the same job of humanising hubby. Why? Class is more important than colour. Cherie is as smart as Michelle. Tony needed tying to the people even more than Barack.

Barack Obama will win. George Bush, Cheney's glove puppet, has been too disastrous a President for the Republicans to win.
Even better, the democrats will sweep into power in the senate and the house. The problem is that Obama's coat tails may not be strong enough to help them do even better there. He needs to be in the same powerful position Roosevelt was in 1933 to turn the levers back to the people, drive the corporations out of the temple and bring the troops back. It'll need all the combined powers of the system working together to do it.

Time for a change is the public mood. Change is the theme of the convention. Desire for change is why Obama will win.
That's the US. What about the UK? Change is working against us and will do in 2010. It needn't be if Labour offers change.
We've given you ten successful years and made everyone better off. Now thanks to the economic crisis things have changed. We'll change it. New policies for a new situation. New policies the Tories can't offer. They want to roll back the state and reduce taxes. We will extend its protection to the people and tax wealth so it pays its share. The Tories are on the side of the big corporations, the big banks, the big oil companies and the big hedge and equity funds. The people who got us into this mess in the first place. When the job changes Labour changes too. |
