Beware the infectious bleatings of ministers like Jack Straw (constitutional Machiavelli), Ed Balls and Peter Hain (ret’d). They’re too terrified and daft to see the benefits of Proportional representation. So they’re rallying round the soft option of the Alternative Vote.
It isn’t proportional. So seats aren’t related to votes. But it is well calculated to boost the Liberals: everyone’s second preference.
When it comes to a hung parliament, the Liberals may be weak willed enough to be fobbed off with AV. Better for them than real democracy which would cut them down in size by eliminating the protest vote which boosts them today.
