Happy New Year to all. It won`t be, but one can always hope. Hope will be in overdrive this year. Performance in low gear.

Can do governments can do mistakes. Does the Mail clamour about have-a-go heroes being prosecuted? Jack Straw will put it right. Six months later he`s back explaining that he can`t.
Does Angela Merkel want the EU to use long life bulbs that save electricity by not emitting light? Then we`ll make them compulsory five years earlier. At which point we discover they damage sensitive skins, cause epilepsy and contain mercury which can`t be disposed of. What`s to jump at next? Read the Mail.

The Constitutionless Constitution allows domestic parliaments to hold up a red card to the Commission. Stop. Look again. It will be totally useless.
The party majority ensures that Parliament can do nothing. Look how much notice they take now. Gwyneth Dunwoody`s Transport Select Committee reported that the Galileo Satellite Guidance system will be a total waste of money, providing at great expense what we now get for free from the US.
Result? Ministers signed on to throw good money after bad for the next stage of this Flying Pigs project.

Someone should show Gordon where the long grass is. He`s such an honest intellectual he doesn`t know about it but he worries and worrits endlessly about problems trying to think a way through things that he should just kick into the long grass.
Suitable long grass kicks? Extension of detention, ID Cards, nuclear power, 24 hour drinking, public sector pay.

A welcome to young Clegg, New Liberal Leader. No jokes about Clever Cleggs because it`s going to be difficult for them with both majors clinging to the muddy middle. Better, therefore, to be gloriously unspecific, youthful and talk a lot about tomorrow. And tomorrow. And tomorrow. Don`t lumber yourself with a lot of policies which the big boys will either steal or rubbish. Or both. Carry on Cleg dancing but in a Kennedy way.
