The Bank has failed the test. A quarter point reduction in the face of rising recession is spitting in the wind.
Instead of getting in control of the situation they`ll be dragged behind it quarter point by quarter point, always too little too late, like bailing out the Titanic with a bucket. You`re running a failing economy, Merv, not an academic seminar.

I applied to be on the Standing Committee on the Housing and Regeneration (Delay to Both) Bill. No chance. Unless you`re slavishly in favour or know nothing at all about Bills you can`t have any part in shaping them.

Shame. This Housing Bill wastes money funding two conflicting programmes, each of which stymies the other. Yvette wants to chuck more money away financing Large Scale Voluntary Transfers to take councils out of the housing game. At the same time she`s pretending to help them lead the new housing drive.
Net result. No housing drive. Unless it`s done by the private sector which has never been good at building public housing to rent in the past.

Crunch time approaches for Gordon. Either we raise taxes on the rich and boost public borrowing or government spending grinds to a halt.

Jacqui Smith hopes to smuggle through an increase in 28 days detention by making it 56 subject to Parliamentary decision when it can be opposed.
Won`t wash. It`s daft to start a fight you can`t win Jacqui. |
