Blair won’t get his Education Bill through unless it’s gutted. He’s discovered the electoral benefits of bashing his own party and its prejudices but it’s a bit difficult to carry on that process in power with a majority of 66.

His White Paper cuts across Labour instincts in favour of local government (which is castrated) and comprehensives (which are scrapped) and most of all against the party’s desire for fairness. Every time you give more power to the pushy middle-class you damage the poor and under-privileged. Their schools get drained where they should get more money.
The White Paper is a mess (just put it through a spell check) but it looks as though poor Ruth is determined to go down with the ship. She’ll ruin for Blair prospects which were glowing under Brown. |
